Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation for Agriculture in Conflict-Affected Countries

In countries impacted by war, the agricultural sector faces extraordinary challenges due to the destruction of natural ecosystems and soil contamination as a result of military actions, the presence of landmines, and explosive remnants of war. To fulfill its critical role in ensuring food security and contributing to climate goals, the agriculture sector in circumstances of war and post-war recovery requires specialized practices that go beyond standard climate measures. These include, among others:

• Humanitarian demining
• Soil decontamination
• Restoration of soil productivity

These practices must be recognized as essential components of climate mitigation and adaptation strategies.

The goal of this panel is to draw the international community’s attention to the unique conditions and urgent needs of the agricultural sector in countries affected by war, particularly in the context of climate change adaptation and mitigation.
